Gasquet Secures Third Round

Richard Gasquet has made his way to the third round of the French Open. He secured a straight set victory over Carlos Berlocq of Argentina yesterday. The Frenchman won the match by 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-4.

Being the local boy, Gasquet had the support of a large section of crowd which was out there to watch the match and he didn’t disappoint any of those people.

Yes, he was given a bit of fight by Berlocq at the start, but, as the match progressed, Gasquet kept taking it in his grasp.

Gasquet, who has a fantastic time on the tour off late, hasn’t had a great record at Roland Garros. He has never managed to go past the pre quarter final round here. He would like to do that this time around and it’s very much possible with the kind of rhythm he is in.

In the first set of the match between Gasquet and Berlocq, both the players committed quite a few mistakes on their serves. As a result, both got broken a couple of times and the set went into the tie breaker which Gasquet clinched by a narrow margin.

The Frenchman, however, kept making errors on his serve in the following set as well, but, he was lucky that Berlocq couldn’t take advantage of any of the break opportunities that went his way.

Gasquet got only one break opportunity in the second set and he latched on that to seal the set by 6-4.

In the decider, for a change, Gasquet served fantastically well and didn’t let his opponent get even a single break point. He himself got a breakthrough though just like the previous set and won the decider by the same margin of 6-4 to finish off the match.

In the next round, Gasquet will take on Fernando Verdasco.

GASQUET FALLS

Richard Gasquet’s campaign in the BNP Paribas Open has come to an end. He suffered a comprehensive defeat against Fernando Verdasco in the round of 16 yesterday. The score line of the match was 6-7(5), 1-6 against the Frenchman.

Gasquet didn’t play as badly as the above numbers suggest though. He was very competitive in the opening set which he eventually lost in the tie breaker and then, in the following set, his game fell apart a little bit.

He just didn’t seem to be there 100% mentally in the second set. He looked exhausted and ended up playing lose shots to just gift his opponent the points.

It was the 15th time that these two players were going head to head against each other. Out of the last 14 encounters, both had won 7 each. So, this win gave Verdasco a lead of 8-7.

It’s not that Gasquet didn’t get opportunities during the match. He actually got plenty of them, but, he managed to capitalize on just a few and thus, deservedly ended up on the losing side.

The no. of break points that Gasquet got in total was 8 and he missed out every time.

Verdasco on the other hand pounced on a couple of break points and that helped him in winning the second set by such a big margin.

The match went on for about one and half hours, 95 minutes to be precise.

Now, in the quarter final round, Verdasco will be locking horns with the local boy John Isner who is in very good form at the moment. He banged in 13 aces in his last match against the Taiwanese player Yen-Hsun Lu and beat him with complete dominance in just more than one hour.
